NeoTropico Consultants
is an organisation whose aim is to encourage
research and development of the therapeutic
and economic potential of South American medicinal
plants and their derivatives. Based on a virtual
and interactive philosophy of work, NeoTropico
designs strategies for the implementation of
national collaborative research projects, and
evaluates potential international partnerships
in order to promote health and economic development
in the region, based on the use of medicinal
plants and phytomedicines.
In order to fulfil our aims, NeoTropico has establisher its Consultancy Service,
allowing our Organisation to offer scientific
and technical advice to the corporate and
public sectors in order to design, plan and
co-ordinate activities ranging from identification
of innovative South American ethnobotanical
leads for foods, cosmetics, pesticides, medicines,
and fibber products, to the implementation
of primary health attention projects using
medicinal plants and phytomedicines within
local health care systems.
As a first step to design and implement a
research programme for the search of new natural
products of interest in the region, we have
successfully started a Bank of Extracts of
regional plants. Based on ethnopharmacological
information, we have also created the Peruvian
Medicinal Plants Database, one of the most
biodiverse countries in South America, intended
to assist and to be the first free on-line
communication channel for researchers and
market makers, providing complete, comprehensive,
up-to-date and accurate information on Peruvian
medicinal plants and natural products. This
has been made possible thanks to our active
involvement in the research of South American
medicinal plants, reflected in our list of
publications.
Besides increasing the pharmacological knowledge
of the regions flora, the organisation´s
interest is to guarantee a proper and efficient
feedback of both information and benefits
obtained by such activities towards local
people and communities, since in many cases
it is realised that these groups have played
an important role in providing valuable material
and information.
